This weekend, is a magical weekend in English Football, its the first round of the FA Cup. While in other countries knockout cup trophies don’t seem to have the same romance, or weight, there is something genuinely special about the FA Cup.
Over the last few years, as English Football has grown and grown, talk comes that the Romance of the Cup is gone, and indeed, that it just isn’t as important in the Champions League age as it was years ago.
But as I stood watching my team lose yesterday, I realised that is all wrong. The FA Cup is still incredibly exciting, and gives small teams a chance to put themselves up against absolutely anybody.
Besides, try telling Bath City, Barrow or Kettering Town fans that the Cup has lost its magic – they’re all into the next round and ready to face up against even bigger teams.

Albert Camus, the philosopher, author and football fanatic, was once asked that if he had to choose between football and the theatre, which he would choose. He replied “Football, without hesitation”
And its little surprise, football has everything theatre has, and more. It has a story, but is unwritten. It has all the characters, the protagonists, and antagonists. It has the good guys, and the bad guys.
Footballers have to take some kind of role. Some players are loved – regardless of the club they play for. Think of Maldini, of Pele, or of Messi. People like them.
Very few of the great players take the role of the pantomime villian. Diego Maradona is the most obvious one, and Cristiano Ronaldo has joined him on that list. What is the appeal of the bad boy we love to hate?

Last week, I asked you to vote for you favourite 20 players of the decade, here in this very post, are the Top 100 players of the last 10 years, voted for by you, the readers and bloggers of the offside.
First thing I want to say is thank you, everyone for the absolutely amazing response to this. Its been absolutely overwhelming. Over 50 votes in the thread and then probably double that sent to my inbox. The response has been brilliant.
And, I’ve enjoyed very much the reminders of the great players across the decade, the outrage at the forgotten, and the insight into what you guys think makes a great player. It has been an absolute pleasure to compile.
A final thank you to the players themselves, it has been a wonderful decade for football, and this my celebration of you.
On with the list then, and after the jump you get the full 100, in reverse order. Not a huge surprise about the winner, but some nice quirks and things elsewhere.

Some advance warning: This post is going to be mildly critical of Zinedine Zidane. Nothing too harsh, because - as for many people - he was one of my favourite players to watch. The vision, the touch, the roulettes, the shiny bald patch. Loved it. But that's also the reason I'm about to mildly criticize him. Don't worry, this will all make sense in a minute.
My disappointment with Zizou is as follows: The man retired from football in July 2006. That's well over three years ago. Yet despite no longer being a professional footballer, Zinedine Zidane still keeps trying to sell me things, usually things branded with three stripes.
Most recently he's been fronting the "Every Team Needs..." campaign, which is - no question - an excellent set of ads.
But, aside from the question of whether someone who is no longer a professional footballer should be allowed to tell us which boots to wear (my answer: maybe) I can't shake the suspicion that Zidane is such a great marketing frontman because we're all being denied the chance to see him in action.
Movies and soccer. Two things that traditionally don’t mix well. In documentary form, maybe. But in scripted Hollywood form? No. For various reasons, it usually ends in either cheesy emotions, unconvincing action, or Robert Duvall’s Scottish accent in A Shot at Glory.
But not always. There are a handful of good football movies out there. So we want to hear from you. Which football movies are worth watching?
I’ve seen the above game described as a “catfight”, but that absolutely does not do it justice. Bringham Young University vs New Mexico in the Women’s Mountain West Conference college tournament last night was more like the roughest game of soccer ever captured on YouTube, and it featured the roughest display of defending I’ve ever seen.
New Mexico #15 Elizabeth Lambert puts in more than one nasty tackle, punches an opponent in the back and somehow gets away with yanking an opponent to the floor by the ponytail. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if she was actually trying to pull her head clean off. Last but not least, when Lambert brings a BYU player down on the edge of the box, you can see one of her New Mexico teammates run in and fire the ball straight at the fallen player’s face.
Julie Foudy was not impressed.
Once again, those rave green thoughts that kept me awake: Jorge Gonzalez. That's the referee. Has he reffed for us before? Can't remember anything about him. Without more information, I might as well assume he's good, right? Why not? I mean, why not

Boghossian is a beast. I don't remember if NOB bought him or if he is on loan (I am thinking he is on loan) but I am
Nov 07, 2009 | Read this article...Inter v Roma Best news you'll hear up until the game: they aren't supposed to win. Which really makes it fun, eh? Inter are in good form; Roma are not. Inter have a fully fit squad; Roma do not. Inter are at home; Roma are only sorta at home. Classic nothing to

Nov 07, 2009 | Read this article...July 8th I kicked out most of the existing staff, handing them their (very generous) buyouts and assuring them that there were no hard feelings. I’m not sure how the French press works, but they hadn’t caught wind of what had happened before my first press conference. The press conference went fine.
Nov 07, 2009 | Read this article...Just as it should, this game gets top billing this weekend. Say what you will about Roma, for some reason they always bring it when they travel to Milan to play Inter. It doesn't really seem to matter their form or where they sit in the table, when they come
Nov 07, 2009 | Read this article...Or should I saw Wolves 3-Arsenal 2? We come away with 3 points on a scoreline which flatters us a little bit, on the back of 2 early Wolves own goals which put us up 2-0, a vantage point from which we never looked back. Wolves strategy was pretty obvious,
