Why MLS Needs Blanco More Than Beckham
By: Daryl |http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPFvHAzUgg8
Think it’s fair to say that Cuauhtémoc Blanco had a much better MLS 2008 Week One than David Beckham. While Beckham led LA Galaxy to a horrible 4-0 defeat at Colorado Rapids, Blanco scored a 92nd minute equalizer (above) for Chicago Fire at Real Salt Lake. And here’s why I think that’s important:
Ten Things We Learned in the Premier League
By: Daryl |1. It’s different when it’s your own player
Abou Diaby was sent off on Saturday for a studs up tackle on Gretar Steinsson, that was arguably identical to the challenge that put Eduardo in Selly Oak hospital. The only difference was that Steinsson got lucky and escaped injury, while Eduardo didn’t. Wenger was quick to condemn […]
And You Thought Djimi Traore’s Own Goal Was Bad…
By: Daryl |http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l6BHKF4tL0
This magnificent own goal is from last Thursday’s Hungarian Cup second leg tie between Debrecen and Fehervar. Fehervar had won the first leg 2-1, but champions Debrecen were winning the second leg 2-1 in the 86th minute. Extra time beckoned until Fehervar gave away a penalty. The penalty was saved, but - possibly because God […]
Photo of the Day: Hey, Look At Me
By: chris |Obafemi Martins shows off for the crowd after his goal against Tottenham over the weekend, but only a handful of the crowd was watching, the rest were looking way off somewhere else. People just don’t appreciate a good celebration anymore. (Glyn Kirk/AFP/Getty Images)
The Reinvention of Michael Owen
By: Daryl |Michael Owen’s career was in danger. Not just from injuries, but from tactical trends (one up front, three up front) that aren’t kind to old-fashioned goalpoacher types who don’t contribute anything beyond getting their name on the scoresheet. Who wants an out and out goalgetter when you can have a complete package like Cristiano Ronaldo?
Owen […]
As Jose’s World Turns
By: chris |It was a busy end to the week for you if you’re constantly scouring the tabloids for all things José Mário dos Santos Félix Mourinho (out of all those names he clearly should’ve gone with Felix). It appears Setanta Sports isn’t going to be enough to quench the employment thirst of Jose, and he’ll be […]
A Tale Of Two Strikes
By: chris |It was Zvjezdan Misimović’s day in the sun playing against his old team and, as you can see above, scoring a gorgeous ball off the bounce just before the stroke of halftime. That is until Lukas Podolski got into the act in the 80th minute, having come on for Miroslav Klose at half time, and […]

Meet: Universidad San Martín de Porres
By: Christian |
Ask anyone what the underdog story of 2008 will be, and you’ll most likely hear about non-league side Havant & Waterlooville’s historic trip to Anfield in the FA Cup. In South America however, a similar type Cinderella story could be brewing from another unlikely source.
Peruvian club Universidad San Martín are having a dream start in […]
Derby and the History of Prem Relegation
By: Ian Rose |It has finally happened. Derby County’s relegation from the Premier League has moved from merely inevitable to official, and they will be headed back down to the Championship next season. Arguments will continue about whether they are the worst team in Premiership history, but I’ll leave that to the Derby (and Sunderland) […]
Penalty Kicks in Spain? ¡Sin Problemas!
By: Ryan |As we have all witnessed, Spaniards have an uncanny ability to toss bottles at opposing coaches from great distance and with great accuracy. (Just ask Juande Ramos or now Armando from Athletic Bilbao)
But apparently their accuracy does actually extend to the pitch, and more specifically to the penalty spot.
Today AS (a Spanish […]
PSG Win the Coupe de la Ligue Amidst Controversy
By: Inara |Yesterday was France’s Coupe de la Ligue (French League Cup) final, held at the Stade de France between Paris Saint-Germain and Racing Club de Lens, otherwise known as PSG and Lens for short.
Both clubs are in danger of relegation, so both really needed this win in order to jump start the remainder of their […]
Essam El-Hadary Leaves Al Ahly…Again
By: Inara |Al Ahly goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary has been in the news quite frequently in recent weeks. We at the Offside and World Cup Blog seem to be writing about him every week.
For those of you needing a recap, El-Hadary has been trying to use the Webster Ruling to force his current club, Al Ahly, to […]
