Ryan Babel Is the New John Barnes

By: Daryl | Comments 19 Comments

Laurie already brought this to everyone’s attention in the Daily Dose, but I just couldn’t resist posting the video.
It’s Liverpool’s Ryan Babel doing some freestyle rapping – in his native tongue – on Dutch radio station 101Barz. Not sure why Babel chose the pseudonym Rio to rap under (certainly it’s no Drogabcite) but apparently Rio [...]

Daily Dose 09.30.08

Some news to read as you watch your 89-year-old granny knit sweaters for the people whose tires she slashed:

Will Chivas USA make the playoffs? (Chivas Offside)
Ryan Babel lays down the beats in a rap video. Probably NSFW, particularly if your boss speaks Dutch. (And who knew that the word f***ing is pronounced [...]

Dimitar Berbatov Finally Does it for ManYoo — Twice

By: Laurie | Comments 5 Comments

The cost per goal figure for Manchester United’s new purchase Dimitar Berbatov is now a real number after he scored today in the Champions League in ManU’s 3-0 win over hapless Aalborg. And not just once, but twice. The above goal took him from zero to one — an opportunistic delivery in [...]

Goalkeeper Scores With his Head

By: Laurie | Comments 5 Comments

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clWtGH7qWms

How often do we see goalkeepers score? Not too often.
How often do we see goalkeepers score off a header? Not too often times a hundred.
But here we see Silvio Proto (who plays for the exquisitely named K.F.C. Germinal Beerschot) getting a last-gasp equalizer.

Photo of the Day: Juergen Smiles Again

By: Laurie | Comments 4 Comments

Okay, so a draw isn’t exactly a win. But it’s also not a 5-2 loss of the type that Bayern Munich saw against Werder Bremen a couple of weeks ago, or a 1-0 loss like they suffered to Hannover last weekend.
And given that Lyon’s Champions League goal today was actually a Demichelis [...]

Champions League Matchday 2 (Tuesday) LiveBlogaganza

By: Daryl | Comments 21 Comments

For Champions League Matchday 2 we’re going to try something a little different. Rather than LiveBlogging just the one game here on the front page, we’re going to do an all inclusive LiveBlogaganza to try and follow all eight games simultaneously.
Foolish? Probably. But the plan is to have a place where we can discuss [...]

Did Spurs Get the Wrong Man from Sevilla?

By: Daryl | Comments 1 Comment

Six games in to the season and Spurs boss Juande Ramos is under pressure. When Tottenham went looking to replace Martin Jol last season, Sevilla were doing well (they’d just won the UEFA Cup) and Juande Ramos looked like the perfect man for the job. The man who could bring some of that Seville magic [...]

New African Soccer Magazine is Now Free

By: Daryl | Comments 2 Comments

Back in January we spent a month covering the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations on WCB. The three things I took away from this were:
1) African football is on the rise, 2) Manucho is a damn fine footballer, and 3) There’s not nearly enough written about African football.
What I mean by 3) is that [...]

John Cleese Explains The Offside Rule

By: Daryl | Comments 3 Comments

There’s been some debate about exactly how offside works, mostly surrounding Ronaldinho’s goal for Milan against Inter.
Luckily John Cleese recorded the above explanation of the offside rule for 2006 tv show “The Art of Football”. So that clears that up then.

Top 10 Dumbest Football Injuries

By: Daryl | Comments 6 Comments

Stoke’s Liam Lawrence could miss next weekend’s game against Portsmouth with an ankle injury – after falling over his own dog (not pictured).
A stupid way to injure yourself no doubt, but not quite brainless enough to make our top 10 Dumbest Football Injuries list:

Croatian Twins Score Twin Amazing Goals

By: Daryl | Comments No Comments

Something quite amazing happened over the weekend. Croatian midfielder Frane Vitaić scored for Romanian Liga I side Otelul Galati from his own half with this brilliant long range strike (above). It was so unlikely that the television broadcast missed it first time round and only managed to show it in the replay.
But here’s the really [...]

Frank Lampard Gave Jose Mourinho “A Bitter Taste in the Mouth”

By: Laurie | Comments 3 Comments

Hell hath no fury like a manager scorned.
Jose Mourinho (formerly at Chelsea, currently at Inter, for those who’ve been asleep for the last year) just gave an interview in the Gazzetta dello Sport where he expresses great disappointment that Frank Lampard re-signed with Chelsea. Does anybody else think this sounds more like [...]

Trouble in Barcelona, But Who’s to Blame?

By: Daryl | Comments 1 Comment

Barcelona came from behind and won the Catalan derby 2-1 with two late goals, but the big news was the crowd violence. With home team Espanyol leading twenty minutes from the end, Barcelona’s notorious Boixos Nois supporters began raining flares down on Espanyol fans, as you can see in the video above.
Referee Medina Cantalejo had [...]
