Serie A to Breakaway

By: Daryl | Comments 8 Comments

News from Italy today is that Serie A clubs will soon be leaving their Serie B brothers behind to form a breakaway top flight. Think of it as the Italian Premier League if you like, though it almost definitely won’t be called that. Let’s hope not anyway.
It all started with an argument about how the [...]

In Defence of the Defensive Approach

By: Daryl | Comments 27 Comments

I think it’s fair to say that Barcelona weren’t too impressed with Chelsea’s approach to the Champions League on Tuesday night. Guus Hiddink sent Chelsea out to defend, and got exactly what he wanted with a 0-0 draw. The reaction from the Barça camp was unanimous. Sample quote from Xavi: “We played football; they did [...]

Carmelo Valenica Learns Honesty is Not Always the Best Policy

By: Daryl | Comments No Comments

Watching the replay (above) it’s pretty obvious that Millonarios striker Carmelo Valenica took a deliberate tumble in the big Colombian derby vs Santa Fe last Sunday. Millonarios equalized from the spot and Santa Fe keeper Agustin Julio was sent off.
But Valencia couldn’t keep his mouth shut in the post match interview (also above, but in [...]

Special 1 TV: Rafa Makes A Gesture

By: chris | Comments 2 Comments

Another genius submission – and a few days too late (our apologies).
The show’s rolling along nicely until Rafa calls in, at which point it all goes downhill. Wayne’s heart stops over some Arshavin antics and Sir Alex phones only to accuse Rafa of making a gesture at him – over the phone. The madness ensues.

Arsene Wenger Accused of “Child Trafficking”.

By: chris | Comments 2 Comments

As entire managements go, Bayern’s board wins the award for quotability hands down. Between Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinze Rummenigge, you’re bound to find volumes and volumes of fantastic missiles towards any and all in world football on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis.
Today Karl-Heinze has stepped up to the dais to give his thoughts [...]

Champions League Semi-Final: Man Utd vs Arsenal 1st Leg LiveBlog

By: Daryl | Comments 3 Comments

You ever done a Google Image Search for “fergie vs wenger”? At time of writing you get 733 results, but only one of those results features both men in their penguin suits. So we went with that one.
Which is my convoluted way of saying “Welcome to the Man Utd vs Arsenal Champions League semi-final 1st [...]

We May Have Found the World’s Worst Referee

By: Daryl | Comments 4 Comments

Penalty shootouts are cruel. I speak from bitter experience as someone who’s watched England exit more than one tournament from the spot. It’s basically your team vs fate. But what if it was your team vs fate AND the referee?
That’s what happened to Malawian team Escom United this week in the Presidential Cup final, [...]

Man Utd vs Arsenal Champions League Preview: Revival of a Rivalry

By: Daryl | Comments 7 Comments

Remember when the Premier League was Man Utd and Arsenal’s to fight over? Before Abramovich and his wallet arrived the title race was basically Fergie vs Wenger scratching each other’s eyes out, and it felt like that rivalry would last forever. It had everything: Angry Brit vs Fancypants Foreigner, old school two eyes vs new [...]

Barca 0 – Chelsea 0; Or, Guus 1 – Barca 0.

By: chris | Comments 20 Comments

Barcelona 0 – Chelsea 0
Depending on how you look at matters – or what self-serving country you hail from -either Barcelona failed in their chances to take a result back to Stamford Bridge or Chelsea put in a hero’s defensive outfit at the home of the world’s best team.
And largely it’s a bit of both. [...]

Champions League Semi-Final: Barcelona vs Chelsea 1st Leg LiveBlog

By: Daryl | Comments 13 Comments

You know a game is big when it gets four previews on The Offside.
On Barça Offside, Kevin gives us a nice run down of the key player match-ups and also singles out “our very own translucent gem of a midfielder, Andres Iniesta.”
Jack agrees on Chelsea Offside, arguing that stopping Iniesta and Xavi is more important [...]

Barca v Chelsea: An Unstoppable Force Meets An Immovable Object.

By: chris | Comments 11 Comments

Barcelona v Guus Hiddink in the Knockouts
We’ve been drooling over Barcelona this season, and with good reason. They’ve played the sort of attacking football that makes grown men cry with joy. But that doesn’t make them unbeatable. Not when they’re going up against Guus Hiddink in the knockout rounds. And not when they’re going up [...]
