African Amputees Play Soccer for Peace

amputee-soccer.jpgBased on the number of people coming to this site through search terms like “Sunderland sex romp,” “Landon Donovan’s small penis,” and “Oliver Kahn scares the bejeebus out of me,” I can tell that ours is a feel-good story type of audience looking to welt up after reading about athletes overcoming impossible odds. Ok, most of you are just a bunch of perverts and I love you for it, but take a second to indulge me while you read this legitimately heart warming story about the first international match in Liberia between amputees. Congratulations to all of the participants. It is a also a bit late, but congratulations are in order for Russia, as well, as they proved that they are not only kings of the homeless soccer but also kings of the amputee world.

Good to see amputee soccer expanding in Africa, and that it received recognition outside the disability sport community.

There was an African championship tournament tentatively scheduled for next month, but I don't know its current status (the status of most amputee soccer tournaments, and not just in Africa, are hopelessly subject to last-minute revision/cancellation). Interesting to see that the story was not picked up on the BBC's disability sports web page.

Minor nit, the Russians aren't the kings unless/until they defeat Brazil -- all one can say is that the Russians are kings of the *European* division of the amputee world. Russia lost to Brazil in the last amputee soccer world championships, and Brazil didn't participate in the European Championships in Volgograd to which you refer. It won't be a surprise if Brazil and Russia face each other again in the finals in the upcoming world championships in Turkey. They are two very closely matched teams, and clearly superior to just about everyone else...
