Fan for a Match: Choking on Guinea Pigs
By: Bob | September 25th, 2006
If our Fan for a Match experiment has proven anything, it is that it doesn’t matter which continent we turn to, our support brings out the worst in teams. This was the case on Sunday when this week’s selection from Tunisia, Esperance, could only manage a 1-1 draw against the lowly thugs from Renacimiento of Equatorial Guinea.
While we have never had the pleasure of playing in Equatorial Guinea and can only imagine that it is probably a pretty hostile environment for visiting teams, it is almost unfathomable to think that the team that has won Tunisia’s domestic league seven-straight times would only come away with a point against a team that is proving to be the biggest punching bag in Africa’s Champions League.
Such is the fate of our Fan for a Match teams. It has been six straight weeks since we’ve tasted the fruits of victory and during that time we’ve suffered losses and draws in South America, Russia, Australia, Europe and now Africa. We’re running out of continents on which to lose.
But we forge forward with this somewhat noble cause and will select another team this Thursday. You can help us out by suggesting a team for our support by leaving a comment or shooting an email to bob [at] theoffside.com. We’ve established our street cred for ineptitude so you might want to nominate a team that you want to see lose.
