Fan for a Match: Esperance
By: Bob | September 21st, 2006After more than a month of seeing our Fan for a Match selections from South America to Siberia crash and burn, we think we’ve found a surefire winner this week. We’re taking our support to Africa on Saturday where our lads from the Tunisian team Esperance are on the road to take on Renacimiento of Equatorial Guinea in group play of the African Champions League.
For a number of reasons, we’re confident that Esperance is the key to getting back on the winning track. The first is that the team is pretty nifty on the pitch. They have won seven straight league titles in Tunisia. Any team with that type of record is either playing in a crap league or is controlled by the government and/or Russian mob. Always a good sign.
The second reason we’re coming away with a win is that Esperance’s opponent is arguably the worst team in the African Champions League. Renacimiento might be kings of Equatorial Guinea, a county that is fascinatingly detailed in the book Wonga Coup, but they have lost all three of their Champions League matches so far and have given up 13 goals in the process. We think Esperance will handle the always difficult environment in Malabo and walk away with an easy victory.
Tune in Monday for the result and remember that there is absolutely no logic to the team we select each week so we could very well select yours if you shoot us an email bob [at] theoffside.com or leave a comment with your suggested team. You’ll want us on your bandwagon because after this week’s triumph there will be no stopping us.
