Fan for a Match: Soaring to Victory
By: Bob | October 2nd, 2006
There probably is an old adage somewhere out there about victories tasting better because of defeats. We know that feeling all too well today now that our six-game Fan for a Match winless streak has finally come to a glorious and resounding end.
Our adopted team this past weekend, the mighty Moroka Swallows from South Africa, delivered a win for the ages by knocking off Ajax Cape Town 2-1 on the road in front of a hostile crowd. While we don’t expect Disney to make a movie about an early season match involving a pair of teams that aren’t even rivals in South Africa’s premier league, we couldn’t have asked for a better script.
Tied 1-1 in the final minute and with Ajax Cape Town’s standout keeper and captain Hans Vonk off with injury and their coach off for arguing with a linesman, the hero of the week Mark Haskins blasted home the game winner for the Beautiful Birds to send Fan for a Match fans everywhere into a wild frenzy. How sweet it was.
Now that we have tasted victory, we don’t plan on losing ever again. We’ll make our next Fan for a Match selection on Thursday. Your nominations are welcomed in the comments or at bob [at] theoffside.com. The criteria are simple. It has to be a team we don’t normally support, which makes 99.9% of the teams in the world eligible.
