A Name to Remember: Wang Dalei

By: Bob | November 7th, 2006

wang-dalei.jpgFor a number of years now, commentators have been predicting that the next wave of foreign players to reach the European leagues will come from China. With a billion people and an increased focused on the increasingly popular sport of football, it is probably only a matter of time before China starts producing world class players. Wang Dalei might just turn out to be one of those players.

A 17-year-old goalkeeper with Shanghai United, Dalei has been on the big clubs’ radar screens for a few years now. He was shortlisted for the AFC Youth Player of 2004 award and was recently named to China’s squad for next month’s Asian Games. Following a ten-day trial earlier this year with Inter Milan, Wang looks poised to join PSV Eindhoven during the winter transfer window.

Wang is known for his quick reactions in net and for displaying a maturity in goal that is well behind his years. There aren’t too many Chinese keepers who have even attracted attention beyond their borders so Wang’s skills have to be something special and that makes him one to watch.
