Did Nawaf Al-Abid Score the Fastest Goal in Football?
By: Daryl | November 9th, 2009The above strike from Al-Hilal midfielder Nawaf Al-Abid (or Alabed, you choose) is said to be the fastest goal in world football. It came just two seconds into Al-Hilal’s Prince Faisal bin Fahd Cup (a U-23 tournament) game vs Al- Shoulain in Saudi Arabia this weekend.
No doubting the fact that this goal was quick. Very quick, as Al-Abid receives the ball from kickoff, shoots from the centre circle and 1-0. But my lack of Arabic language skills mean that the only source I have for all this information is the “info” part of the above YouTube video. Which maybe isn’t the most authoritative source.
So, if anyone out there can find a link to an actual media story (newspaper or official website would work) then please let us know in the comments.
However, the title of this post doesn’t have a question mark on the end just because I can’t read Arabic. There’s another reason to ask the question. If we assume all of the above is true, then does the fact that the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Cup is an U-23 tournament and not a full senior tournament make a difference? Should the title “fastest goal in football” be reserved only for fully senior, top-level football? Or is age nothing but a number, with the more important number being the time on the clock?
Big thanks to wob for sending this YouTube vid to tips[at]theoffside[dot]com
