J-League vs K-League, The Future of the All-Star Game
By: Daryl | February 22nd, 2008All-Star games are going international. The traditional J-League exhibition game between fan-selected East and West teams is being replaced by a J-League All-Stars XI vs K-League All- Stars XI (from South Korea, in case you didn’t know.) There’ll be two legs, with the first on August 2nd this year in Japan, the second in 2009 in South Korea. Apparently the idea came from J-League All-Star sponsor Japan Energy, which is slightly worrying but a good idea is a good idea damn it.
And I think maybe this is the future. For example, we could see the MLS All-Stars take on representative XIs from rival leagues, instead of playing against pre-season European teams who turn up half-arsed and don’t take it seriously.
Pitting All-Star teams against each other would at least ensure both sides were out to win, since the players would be representing their leagues. The games will always have a certain novelty aspect, but with pride at stake for both teams we could see some great encounters. Emerging leagues would theoretically be out to prove who’s best, and I’d love to see maybe the A-League involved in a four way MLS, J-League, K-League and A-League tournament. Any takers?

I think this is a really good idea.
For MLS the best bet is to forge a closer relationship with the Mexican league.
