A Wild Final Day in Australia

By: Martha | January 20th, 2008

When the final day of the A-League season started, four teams were level on points at the top of the table, and the title was anyone’s to win. When the dust settled, the regular season title was in the hands of Central Coast Mariners, who beat bottom club Wellington Phoenix 2-0 to finish with 34 points from their 20 matches. Newcastle Jets also won their final match and finished with 34 points, but a superior goal difference left Central Coast top.

The best game of the day, though, was between Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC, in which an A-League record crowd saw the Victory came from behind twice to draw with their bitter rivals 2-2, a result that not only denied Sydney the title, but also left them in third place, and facing a single-elimination game next week in the A-League’s insanely complex post-season playoff system.
