Pachuca Beats Saprissa to Take CONCACAF Champions Cup
By: Laurie | May 1st, 2008It was Mexico over Costa Rica yesterday in the last CONCACAF Champions Cup final.
The Mexican side Pachuca are the repeat CONCACAF champions after beating Costa Rica’s Saprissa 2-1 in the second leg of the final yesterday, 3-2 on aggregate. The teams tied 1-1 in the first leg, and since there is no away goal rule in this competition, it all came down to this.
Pachuca’s Christian Gimenez started the game with a bang, scoring in the third minute. They got the second goal in the 54th with a high header by Luis Gabriel Rey. Saprissa finally managed to pull one back late in the game with a goal by Jairo Arrieta, but it wasn’t enough. Pachuca repeat.
They move on again to represent the CONCACAF region in the Club World Cup in Japan at the end of the year. They’re hoping for a better performance this time around after getting upset in the first round of the 2007 competition by Tunisia’s scrappy little team Etoile du Sahel.
This will be the final CONCACAF Champions Cup. Starting later this summer, the competition will expand from eight to 24 teams and become the CONCACAF Champions League.
