A Name to Remember: Alfonso Alves

By: Bob | April 30th, 2007

afonso_alves.jpgIf you follow the Dutch Eredivisie you know the name Alfonso Alves all too well. The Brazilian forward finished as the leading goal scorer in the 2006-07 season. He netted a club record 35 goals in 31 games for SC Heerenveen. Alves’ name will likely get wider exposure next season as this performance has increased the speculation that he will end up with a big club in the very near future.

Alves joined Heerenveen after spending a couple of seasons playing for Malmo FF. Before that he played for another Swedish side, Orgryte IS, for two years. All told, he scored 94 goals in 52 games in Sweden, finishing second in the league in scoring twice. For those scoring at home he has scored 129 goals in 83 games since 2002. Not exactly a bad clip, eh?

The speculation is that Chelsea are interested in acquiring Alves’ goal scoring services, but they will have to do so at a pretty significant price. Heerenveen are keen on keeping their most expensive singing in history and their chairman has been quoted as saying he wants a million dollars for every goal Alves scored.

That ain’t going to happen, but if Chelsea or another club are able to come up with the right price it will be fascinating to see if Alves, who is renowned for his free kick skills, can continue to score at such a torrid clip in a different league.

Here’s the requisite video clip set to questionable music.

its not 129 goals in 83 games, its 83 goals in 129 games. 129 in 83 would be ridiculous.

IF AZ Alkmar lose there court case on wednesday 23rd he will be coming to boro, although i recon boro will have to pay compensation to AZ. cant see him playing for AZ, think it would be silly for them to try to keep him if he clearly wants to play for boro

This guy is gonna be yet another flop of a striker in the EPL…The Dutch defenders and keepers make him look good. Look at the goals he scores, it’s either due to poor marking, bad offside traps or through bad positioning of keepers in freekicks…Try doing that against the likes of Terry, Gallas, Woodgate and Vidic…

Well his two goals against Man U plus his desperately unlucky performance against chelsea shows that a lot on here hadn’t a clue what they were talking about!
