Andres Vasquez Scores a Goal beyond Description

By: Bob | May 8th, 2007

Just when you think you have seen it all in football and you are ready to move on to a new hobby like sitting on a couch all day drinking rum and watching soap operas, along comes something new and remarkable. The goal in the video above comes courtesy of Sweden where Andres Vasquez scored for Goteborg against Orebro (imagine nifty little umlauts above each name). Is there even a term to describe a goal struck by the heel of a back foot? My term of choice would be “lucky” but that probably isn’t the most apt description. What should we call this goal?

It is called a Rabona and that one is best I’ve ever seen.

Good find, Peter. Now that there is a name behind it I see it has been done on more than one occasion. Expect a rockin’ YouTube video to come.

You see passes or crosses like that not infrequently, but rarely shots that work out quite that well.

Of course, if homeboy could use his right foot, we might not be seeing this goal. Though maybe this trickeration was enough to distract the keeper from his impending shot, if that was even what he was trying to do (I’m far from convinced).

Vasques was asked to do it again by Swedish television and he did it, of course with no defenders around, but still:

This is not luck. Andres Vasquez has the skills. He did it two more times for national tv. In a couple of years you will see this guy in a big club. Hopefully Liverpool.

its a semi-fluke. points for style. he was tryin a cross. he’s looking in the middle. the attacker is ready for the cross. the camera man even thought he was gonna cross. Its a great goal. i’m glad he tried it. but its not what he meant

    Bob,

This pass/shot/move is not new. Don’t know how old are you or how long you been following football, but I’ve seen this kind of play many many times before. It known as La Rabona, like the first guy said, and this particular type of move was done many times by Claudio Borghi of Argentina.

Eduardo – Here is a later post that shows tons of Rabona;. I’d seen passes like that before, but never a goal like that. Fun to see. Cheers

But of course this guy had to be Peruvian and should be playing with the national team this year. Look out for Peru in 2010 world cup. With this guy and Raimond Manco (best sub 17 player in South America) Peru is sure to return to their glory days of Cubilas.

Andres Vasquez a skillful Peruvian player with a superb touch on the ball, in my opinion this is the best goal ever.

Its fake…he didn’t mean it…look at his eyes when he is about to do it and when he finishes…he’s looking at the player’s inside the box

He’s not Peruvian, he’s Swedish. He has stated he will never play for Peru. He intended to shoot, there were no players in good positions in the box.

He is Peruvian, but he wanted to sell his nationality. He nationalized Swedish. However he was born in Lima, Peru. Furthermore, he did intend to make that goal, he can do rabona’s quite adeptly. The Swedish media asked him to repeat his feat, and he did it quite easily. Someone else already posted this.

Actually, nevermind. He IS Peruvian, he’s just a Swedish resident, and that’s all one needs to play for the Swedish national team. Both countrie’s presses have stated how he wishes to play for their own nation. However, he has stated that he would play for Peru if he is called to do so.
