Anderlecht coach Frank Vercauteren doesn’t want to Beat AC Milan

During his playing days, the Belgian winger Frank Vercauteren was known as the “Little Prince”. As a coach of Anderlecht, it is unlikely that he will ever be called the “Mental Giant”.

Ahead of his club’s Champions League clash with AC Milan on Tuesday, Vercauteren explained how it would be better for his team to get a draw than a win.

“Winning would be quite dangerous, particularly for the next game,” Vercauteren said. “There is no point winning against Milan and then falling asleep for the next games and not qualifying. You can be happy with a draw.”

Hmm, there is no point in winning against Milan except for something called three points. You know, the three points you get for a win. The same three points that could make the difference between advancing out of Group H and an early exit from the competition.

I’ve never been confused with a math major, but three points seems to be more than one and isn’t the whole point of playing a match to try to win? Maybe if by some stroke of luck Anderlecht actually does win, Vercauteren could donate the extra two points to another team and everyone could walk away happy.
