Champions League Draw

By: Bob | August 24th, 2006

sfgbar08get.jpgIf you have more of a life than we do and you weren’t watching the Champions League draw on your computer as it happened, than you can re-live the magical hour that was by reading Deadly Musings’ liveblog of the event.

As thrilling as watching names being drawn out of a bin can be, we are actually quite excited by the Champions League draw this year. For the third straight year we get to see Chelsea and Barcelona meet up in the group stages and we think that this will finally be the year where Jose Mourinho loses it and strangles Frank Rijkaard. Unfortunately, everybody’s most favorite wonderful loveable team from Bulgaria, Levski Sofia, is also in that group so the team we would actually want to win has no shot in hell of advancing to the knockout round.

There are, of course, some other intriguing matchups. Manchester United and Celtic are both paired together with Benefica likely to send one of them home early. Liverpool gets stuck with PSV Eindhoven and the always tricky team from Turkey, Galatasaray. AC Milan gets a relatively easy group that should help the Italian club pad its depleted bank account some more. And Real Madrid’s glamour boys should have tons of fun visiting Bucharest and Kiev in the winter.

Here’s how the groups shape up:

Group A: Barcelona, Chelsea, Werder Bremen, Levski Sofia
Group B: Inter, Bayern Munich, Sporting Lisbon, Spartak Moscow
Group C: Liverpool, PSV, Bordeaux, Galatasaray
Group D: Valencia, Roma, Olympiakos, Shakhtar Donetsk
Group E: Real Madrid, Lyon, Steaua Bucharest, Dynamo Kiev
Group F: Manchester United, Celtic, Benfica, FC Kobenhavn
Group G: Arsenal, Porto, CSKA Moscow, Hamburg SV
Group H: Milan, Lille, AEK Athens, Anderlecht

Go ahead. Live on the edge and predict the winner of each group. We’re going with:

Group A: Barcelona
Group B: Inter
Group C: PSV Eindhoven
Group D: Valencia
Group E: Real Madrid
Group F: Benefica
Group G: Arsenal
Group H: Milan

How the f*uck did AC Milan end up with such a ridiculously easy draw? They shouldn’t even be allowed to play in the Champions League.

I pretty much agree with your picks to win the group except I would have Roma edging Valencia in Group D.

I agree with Jose. How is it right that the widely recognized two best teams in the world are in the same damn group?

Oh, and f*ck Milan. What a crock of sh*t.

The UEFA Coefficients go back five years so Chelsea is still affected by being knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Viking Stavanger and Maccabi Tel-Aviv in those first two years. So next year, they should be a top seed.

Just wanted to make a point – Liverpool won in 2005. Period. Wankers.

Also the russian team from london and the catalans need to be very careful not to lose sight of Werder Bremen – a very tough team that will get a good weather lift in the cold months that could make things even more difficult for either of the bigger sides. Don’t forget that Klose plays for Werder and i know several players from both teams would rather forget he ever played in Germany 2006.

Francesco would make a solid Italian judge.

If you are big, popular and rich your actions can be excused because lots of people will be dissapointed. Great message.

UEFA and Italian justice look like buffoons in this.
