Cop Attacked at Red Star Match
By: Martha | December 4th, 2007
There’s a long history of violence in Serbian football and, even now, it’s rare that a big match comes off without fights between fans and, sometimes, pauses in play while things are brought under control. And, during this weekend’s match between Red Star Belgrade and Hajduk Kula, it happened again.
A plainclothes policeman was in the stands, filming a fight between supporters when Red Star Ultras noticed him and realized what he was. They set upon him with flares and broken seats, briefly setting his clothes on fire and beating him badly. In the end, the cop saved himself by firing two warning shots in the air, and was taken to the hospital in critical conditions; he’s now been stabilized and is expected to recover fully. (The video is here, but it’s hard to see anything properly; a gallery of photos is here.)
The ironic thing is that there are strict laws — to the tune of a decade in prison for offenders — in Serbia about sporting violence, they’re just never enforced.
