Donadoni Just Can’t Resist
By: Martha | December 28th, 2007
Whatever you think of Italy coach Roberto Donadoni, the man has been nothing less than a saint for the last several months in his remarkable ability to ignore the constant flirting picking and taunting of Raymond Domenech. The Frenchman, for whatever reason, has a wild hair about the Azzurri — and, it appears, Donadoni in particular — and just cannot keep himself from talking about Italian football. He periodically resolves to be quiet, but last time he made it all of three days before starting again.
Now, though, it’s The Don’s turn — apparently he’s actually bitten through his tongue, and is now finally free to speak his mind about Ray Ray. In addition to doing the expected and grumpily denying playing for a draw in Scotland, Donadoni got in a little taunting, and seems to be challenging his counterpart to a little game of one-on-one: “Domenech is good with words, but probably not as good when it comes to playing. If he wants, one day we could play a game and see who wins.” Take that, Ray Ray!
I’m not very hopeful it’ll happen, since Domenech seems the type who prefers to make his pronouncements well out of punching range of his victims, but if a Donadoni/Domenech footballing death match ever happens, it needs to be on pay per view at the very least. And my money’s on The Don — Domenech was no slouch as a player and is surely full of dirty tricks, but Donadoni is 10 years younger and looks like he could step on the pitch and make a difference right now. (I hear Cagliari have been leaving him desperate messages.)
