Less Than Two Months Till Euro 2008!

By: Laurie | April 11th, 2008

Euro 2008 on World Cup Blog. All you need to know.

True Euro story: I was in Dublin, Ireland last week, and I asked the bellman where he was from. He said, “Croatia.” I said. “Oh, Croatia. You guys sure had a big coup knocking England out of Euros, didn’t you?”

He said, “Yes. A lot of people here [in Ireland] are very happy with us for that.”

Even more than World Cup, I think, Euros are all about history and settling old rivalries. Sometimes vicariously, as in the case of Ireland and Croatia. And since the last four teams in World Cup ‘06 were European, this is kind of like World Cup, except without that boring first part where all the rest of the world gets knocked out.

Just kidding, US fans. Put down your weapons.

Believe it or not, there are less than two months till the beginning of Euros. According to the UEFA countdown clock, as I’m writing this there are 57 days, 1 hour and 58 minutes. The teams are starting to talk about naming their squads. And the companies are putting out sticker books. (Just for the record? Anybody who lives in Europe and sends me one, any country, will get serious gold stars. And no, it’s not for my kids. Please.)

What this means is that we’re starting to hit our Euro coverage ver on World Cup Blog pretty hard. Team profiles, group previews, Euro history, player profiles, what crazy thing France coach Raymond Domenech will say next… It will all be there.

In the Youtube video we have a recap, from a French perspective, of the end of the Euro ‘00 final. France vs. Italy. Want to know what’s going on? Stop by our Euro page and find out.

And then keep coming back, because for the next two months, that’s where all the cool people will be hanging out.

Hey! Donadoni's a great coach. Although Lippi's always gonna be hard to replace, Donadoni qualified top of a tricky group with a squad with loads of big names missing, and notably missing that creative spark a la TOTTI :p. He did a great job introducing younger players (Montolivo, Quagliarella, Barzagli etc. and keeping the skeleton of the team tight and close together. FORZA ITALIA
  • My absolute favorite football tournament. I, like Ryan, can't wait to suffer with EspaƱa. =P

I can't wait for Euro2008. I'll be checking out the blog for sure. Oh I really do hope Spain gets far because they have wonderful players but they seem to come out short in the end like Argentina in Copa America. That was just sad.
  • I have to go with Laurie on this one. I think Spain could very well win the Euros this year. They have a fantastic squad, though I was reminded yesterday how much I don't ever want one of my teams to face a Luca Toni team ever again.

    Oh, and Laurie...
This video does not irk me in the least, because I have the World Cup '06 final on DVD in my living room ; ]
Good luck to France though, until they are playing against Italy!

Can't wait to see Italy do what they do best...
    Work MAGIC.
But under Donadoni, I'm not sure if that's happening...
  • I don't know, Ryan. They've beaten both France and Italy in recent months.
  • I can't wait to see Spain underachieve like in every other international competition we've played in.
