Norway’s Tippeligaen: The Hollywood of Europe.
By: chris | March 16th, 2010
Upon hearing the Norwegian Tippeligaen kicked off this weekend, I knew there was only one place to go: YouTube.
Norway’s Tippeligaen and their TV affiliate, TV2, have always had disproportionately cool promos for the league when compared to their European standing – currently ranked 22nd, just behind the juggernaut Cypriot First Division. Last year they remade Nike’s Airport with the Brazilian team, choosing a mall and the league’s superstars as the new setting and cast. In 2008 they did a beach shoot of white tanks tops and flying mud, only they replaced the expected big-haired, blonde-boobed B-list models you’d expect with the league’s more fashionable men in black dress pants.
Without a hint of research, we can probably assume the 2008 Tippeligaen had its highest ever female ratings.
For the ladies:
TV2 went true Hollywood in 2008 with a dig that would fit in amongst the movie industry’s cookie-cutter trailers without a moment’s questioning:
Continuing the Hollywood theme with another company, they followed up in 2009 with an incomplete Wild West shootout.
A 2007 ad yanked at the emotional chords of the viewer – or so one would presume, not understanding a single word of Norwegian.
And that brings us to this year, a bit of a combination of ‘07 & ‘09. The first has a bit of Hollywood trailer in it too, though with a less mocking tone; the second is clearly designed for those who speak Norwegian (or are brilliantly linguistic and can type it all into Google Translate); and the third, while only for the opening weekend, should send you scrambling for the schedule and a stream (even on mute).
