Sex Scandal Brewing in Swiss Football

Usually when The Offside reports to you on players behaving badly, we get to report on English players. (Oh, those English tabloids, so quick on the draw with this kind of thing.) And I am among the first to find great humor when overpaid, overhyped consenting adults do stupid things like lose cellphones containing incriminating photos or videos.

Today, though, we’re looking at Switzerland, at a story that first made me queasy and then just completely pissed me off. And the authorities agree with me. Players from Swiss first division team FC Thun are in big trouble.

Swiss first-division side FC Thun has been hit by a scandal with 12 current or former players detained on Tuesday on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl. …

All those detained have been accused of having sexual relations with the underage girl who was one of the club’s fans. The age of consent in Switzerland is 16.

Sexual relations seem to have occurred on more than one occasion, police said in a statement, adding that the encounters appeared to have been mostly consensual. But it is illegal under Swiss law to have sex with a minor if the age difference is greater than three years.

Twelve players. One girl. One fifteen-year-old girl. And what, exactly do they mean by “mostly” consensual”? If she wasn’t completely screwed up before, she will be now. (And where the hell were this girl’s parents?)

The only thing worse than this story will be when the parents sue the team for a gazillion dollars and win. Anybody want to lay odds on that happening?

Color me disgusted.

Canada's age of consent is 15? That's surprising to me, but you've got that Maple Leaf flag next to your post, so I'll take your word for it. Eek.

Wait- was she hot? How would you know she's 15? It would be legal, albeit distasteful, in Canada as of right now.

With an adult fangirl, it's sad. With a 15-year-old child, it's a crime, and a sex crime at that. I don't know how it is in Switzerland, but if it was in the States, they'd have to go around to their neighbors and tell everyone they were convicted of statutory rape. That'd go over well in a rich footballers' neighborhood.

Yeah, say what you will about CRon and all the other recent Prem sex scandals ... at least they had nothing to do with kids. If all the allegations prove to be true in court, put them away and lose the key.
