Today’s Lesson: Always Remain Upwind from the Tear Gas

If you have ever had the misfortune of being anywhere near tear gas, you’ll understand why Feyenoord’s Henk Timmer looks like he is the victim of a Botox injection gone bad. That is the same expression I usually make when I see a close up of Oliver Kahn. The Dutch keeper and his teammates were sent to the changing room after their UEFA Cup match Thursday against the French side Nancy was halted in the 79th minute because police were forced to use tear gas to quell violence in the stands.

Nancy was ahead 3-0 at the time and after a 30 minute delay to clear out the home supporters, while the away supporters stayed in the stadium, the match ended with the same score. Coming on the heels of a tragic day in Paris, this sort of thing really highlights how the Beautiful Game continues to be tarred by ugliness even when there are no artifical haircare products to be found.
