Turkey is the New Italy

denizlisporlogo.jpgNow that Italy has captured the World Cup and proven the domestic league scandals are hardly an obstacle to glory, other countries might be starting to follow a similar model.

Turkey, still bitter over not qualifying for the World Cup, is trying to bounce back with a match fixing scandal that sounds almost as juicy as the one in Serie A. The country’s football federation is investigating allegations that a match was fixed at the end of last season to help club team Denizlispor – a team most famous for having a cock on their badge – avoid relegation.

“People should come to us with written proof. I don’t believe matches are being fixed in Turkish football,” Turkish Football Federation Chairman Haluk Ulusoy said.

Not that I have ever fixed a match, but if I did I probably wouldn’t sit down and write about it beforehand. Heck, I probably wouldn’t even post a blog entry. Well, maybe I’d brag about it to my friends on Myspace, but the point is that written proof might be hard to come by in this case, but that shouldn’t stop Turkey from going balls out to have a headline-grabbing scandal.

It worked well for Italy after all.
