Punting balls up the park has been a staple for Scottish footie for years, I really thought that Rangers had left all that behind with all the foreign 'talent' they bought over the years. But no, when the going gets tough, just lump it up and do what Rangers have done in all the later stage games which is hang on for a draw and beat them on penalties.

Zenit looked like a useful side, very fast and fabulous passing. Did you see the way they managed to get into threatening positions even though they had the entire Rangers team around them (except Darcheville who was watching the grass grow on the other side of the pitch).

Shame we didn't see shots of Advocaat going up to Smithie and Coisty and telling them to get it right up 'em.

Again, not a Rangers fan but I really wanted them to win the game because it'd have been nice for a Scottish name to appear on a major European trophy.

OK, racism might be little bit broad, and little restrictive at the same time: Russians hate Ukrainians (and vice versa - a historical fact). Middle Asians, and real Caucasians are not in the favorite list also. As for the Africans - check the link above, and you will get the idea.

John - exactly. It reminds me of that Austin Powers quote, "There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch"

And it's interesting to hear statements like "Russians are racist."

That's sad to hear, Ian. I wonder how prevelent that attitude really is among the fans. I wonder if it's a case of the Ultras (or whatever the Russian equivalent) or just the the most outspoken portion of the fan base, or if it's actually just the coach making it up as an excuse.

The composure of Athletic Bilbao's fans was kind of revealing during the minute of silence staged this year after the death of a footballing official, killed by extremist Basque seperatists. While yes, there was a smattering of dissent and interuption in the crowd, by enlarge the silence was observed. In that case it turned out to be an example of a few bad apples...

Chubby - I'm not saying that any team should be forced to hire anyone. And personally, I don't think anyone should ever hire Darcheville, because I tend to think he's rubbish. But if a coach admits to having a racist hiring policy, regardless of the reason, UEFA should get involved. Otherwise, UEFA has to admit that they talk about racism, but really don't care a lick about it. The point is that by allowing racist fans to dictate team policy, he supports it, and if it was any other sort of company, it would go against all sorts of employment law.

Come on man... He is admitting that there is a problem with their fan base, like in Lazio few years back. It will take some time, Russians are racists, even though they still think they are not. Another big name was caught in similar controversy: Oleg Blokhin, without any punishment.
Plus you can't force club to sign dark skinned players just to prove the point.
Of course UEFA can punish them and enforce them to sign Darshville. not only he will play football during the summer, he may also play hockey during thr winter brake and some rugby, when time permits.

Strange. Should Zenit become a European mainstay they will run into a lot of trouble with their fans - or not, given how thoroughly UEFA have enforced their Kick it Out campaign so far...
