This is quite the coincidence. Just a few seconds after publishing this post about whether footballers should be allowed to celebrate with relgious gestures, I find this related story on The Spoiler about a religious celebration turned controversy in Norway.

The Accused Fixed Match In Russia

By: chris | Comments 1 Comment

Another day, another accusation of match fixing in Eastern Europe. No surprise it’s Russia, where the rumblings are around on a seemingly permanent basis.
Terez Grozny took on Krylia Sovetov on the weekend in a match which could send Krylia atop the table with the right results. Far too early in the season for it to [...]

Goal-Line Refs for Europa League

By: Daryl | Comments 10 Comments

As mentioned in yesterday’s Daily Dose, UEFA is going ahead with that extra goal-line referee idea first proposed in Juanuary 2008 and recently trialled during the European Under-19 Championship qualifiers (pictured).
The idea is to have two extra officials, one on each goal-line (as pictured). And it’s getting a trial run in the 2009/10 Europa League.

Poll: The Coaching Selections.

By: chris | Comments 10 Comments

It’s no surprise that coaching changes are typically swift. The selection for the sidelines can impact everything that happens throughout the summer - from the market to the board room to the staff individual player training on holiday. So you don’t mess around.
But this year’s been excessively swift. To the point that unless a shock [...]

The Champions of Europe.

By: chris | Comments 4 Comments

Barcelona took continental honors last week but now, with virtually every European league that runs from fall-spring having closed its doors for the season, it’s time to take a look at the titles which may have escaped the eye.
UEFA’s Football Europe section has a table run down for each of the countries which serves under [...]

Henrik Larsson Still Has Excellent Aim

By: Daryl | Comments 3 Comments

This is too good not to share.
It doesn’t really need explaining, but let’s do it anyway: Swedish goalscoring legend Henrik Larsson (formerly of Celtic, Man Utd and Barcelona) is finishing up his career in the Swedish Allsvenska playing for his hometown club Helsingborg.
In this vid (spotted on - where else? - 101GG) Larsson comes up [...]

Milan Jovanovic: Football’s Mike Tyson.

By: chris | Comments 1 Comment

No, Milan doesn’t have a devastating hook or a comedic lisp. Nor does he have a giant tattoo on his face - though I suppose that’s the next step on the path to crazytown. Milan Jovanovic, striker for Belgian side Standard, simply got hungry midmatch on the weekend and decided that the best way to [...]

The Woodwork Is Not Necessarily A Goalkeeper’s Best Friend.

By: chris | Comments No Comments

“Expect to see this clip on a cheesy sports TV show, and probably a number of other football websites, at some point soon.”
Ask and you shall receive.
These seem to have been popping up a lot lately - the old “ball off the post off the keeper and into the net” type goals. Just ask [...]

Game of the Weekend

By: chris | Comments 1 Comment

Would you believe it wasn’t in Spain? You shouldn’t…but it wasn’t. No, it was actually in Greece and not even in the Super League, which has been over roughly since Olympiacos first took the pitch in the fall. The game of the weekend was the Greek Cup final between Athens clubs AEK and those Greek [...]

By: chris | Comments 6 Comments

This is Sven from Luxembourg, who has become something of a YouTube sensation recently for his freestyling. The kid has incredibly quick legs that have you thinking he might even be able to out-stepover a certain Portuguese winger who loves all things Real Madrid Manchester United Real Madrid. But it’s not all easy, as the [...]

The Plight of Goal Celebrations

By: chris | Comments 2 Comments

Professional athletes spend countless hours honing and perfecting their respective crafts; nurturing the most minute details to hopefully achieve a moment of glory. Then what happens when that moment of glory comes? It all goes a bit wobbly. Poorly choreographed dancing, strange tribal rain dances and weird improvisational gestures sent to WAGs/groupies in the stands. [...]

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died due to crushing at the Hillsborough Stadium during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final. A memorial was held at Anfield in which 30,000 people paid tribute to the deceased through song, minutes of silence, 96 red balloons being released and more. [...]

Food & Rent Now Top Priority For Red Star Belgrade

By: chris | Comments 1 Comment

Despite the harshness of this economic crisis and hoards of players still awaiting wages their clubs simply can’t pay, we don’t typically think of professional athletes as being put out on the street. The savings from those fat contracts should be enough to weather the storm. But that’s not the case for former European champions [...]

The World’s 25 Most Valuable Soccer Teams

By: chris | Comments 6 Comments

Another day, another “world’s richest list”. This one maybe even anticipated, as it’s from one of those big names in the world of finance: Forbes. But it should be mentioned that buyer beware - though it says the world’s Most Valuable Soccer Teams (and by world they, of course, mean Europe) Forbes has been known [...]

The Inferno At Yesterday’s Biggest Rivalry Game

By: chris | Comments 13 Comments

….was not Liverpool v Chelsea. In fact, we might be able to say neither Champions League fixture was yesterday’s biggest match. Given the its widespread touch on the entirety of a major city, we could say yesterday’s biggest game was the Belgrade Derby - one of, along with the Old Firm, the Rome derby and [...]
