The Manual On How Not To Defend, by Sport Recife.

By: chris | Comments 7 Comments

This video quickly goes from the worst non-offside call in history to the worst offside trap in history to the worst goalkeeping in history. In essence this video should have all its copies burn and rid from the earth so as to avoid being viewed by a young, impressionable footballer.
There are three clips: in the [...]

Worldwide Derby Weekend Wrap Up

By: Jan | Comments 4 Comments

This has been a fantastic weekend to hate somebody and wish him ill almost everywhere around the world.
As Daryl pointed out earlier, this weekend’s fixture calendar was overflowing with big derbies and heated rivalries including three different flavored clasicos, inter-city and intercontinental matches. Time for a quick wrap up.

Santos Win the First Copa Libertadores Femenino

By: Daryl | Comments 2 Comments

[video sent to us from See the Cup]
Brazilian team Santos won the inaugural ladies Copa Liberatadores on Sunday, or to give the tournament its full and excellent sounding Spanish language title: Copa Libertadores de Fútbol Femenino.
A healthy crowd of 14,000 were in attendance at the Estádio Urbano Caldeira to see Santos beat Paraguay’s Universidad Autónoma [...]

River Plate: ‘This Number Has Been Disconnected’.

By: chris | Comments No Comments

Things are not great in Argentina at the moment. The national team is, as you may have heard, riding through tumultuous times at the hand of perhaps the only unfireable man in the country. Fortunately they’re masters of their own destiny this evening, so perhaps that will change.
Domestically it was a tough start to the [...]

Rio Branco Unveil The Tandem Bicycle

By: chris | Comments 4 Comments

[101 Great Goals]
This goal is already being declared by many the goal of 2009. It just might be. What is almost entirely certain is that it’s the best goal ever to come from a Serie D Brazilian side. (For those without basic alphabet skills D is the fourth tier.)
One bicycle kick is good. Two bicycle [...]

Girls Gone Violent In Brazil

By: chris | Comments 12 Comments

We hear about brawls – men, women and children – and are always oh so disappointed (Carlos Diog and Luis Fabiano, lookin’ at you as ever). There’s usually no technique, too much timidness and not enough no holds-barred full-on street fighting with whatever weapons one can muster.
Today we have been rewarded – and in [...]

Some Days You Really Do Not Get The Luck

By: Rob | Comments 8 Comments

Meet Juan Manuel Olivera. His week has been worse than yours. He’s currently recovering in hospital, because not only was he knocked out cold during a match for Universidad de Chile against O’Higgins but the Ambulance that he was in crashed.
He clashed with the rival goalkeeper in the game, and the goal-a-game striker [...]

Justice Files: Kung Fu Kicks Get One Year Bans, Apparently.

By: chris | Comments 2 Comments

A transfer window of frugality kicking off the international break makes this, officially, the most boring week in the history of football. My desire for interesting football news hit such embarrassing depths last night I even jumped into the Google machine to see what Steven Appiah is up to these days (not much, it seems).
Fortunately, [...]

Romario to Play Again, at the Age of 43

By: Daryl | Comments 2 Comments

Seems that Romario can’t stop playing football. The striker, who graced the likes of PSV, Barcelona and, er, Miami FC during his 23 year career, hung up his boots at the grand old age of 42 last April with an (alleged) total of 1,003 goals.
We waved goodbye to the great man on The Offside last [...]

Velez Sarsfield’s Hot Girl Mission To Fix South American Football

By: chris | Comments 7 Comments

South America has had a very poor reputation in the footballing community of late, and for good reason. Flying knees and knife attacks are an easy way to achieve this. Postponing the start of the Argentine football season is another. So how does one un-achieve this? Even easier: take your uniforms, cut the shirts in [...]

Ronaldo Is Immune To Things Such As Surgery

By: chris | Comments 8 Comments

About a month back there were some rumors that Ronaldo, while already under the knife for a broken wrist, had some fat sucked out of this tummy in a surgical BOGO (no clue whether or not this was performed in the back of a van in the club parking lot). And with his return impending, [...]

Now That’s A Proper Pitch Invasion

By: chris | Comments 4 Comments

This video really needs no words, as it’s destined for YouTube infamy.
But you know, plenty of people invade pitches. They run on, get their moment in the sun, maybe attack a player or two, spend a few hours in the slammer, but few, if any, truly leave a mark. This Copa Sudamericana fan – perhaps [...]

Seba Verón Takes a Voluntary Pay Cut

By: Daryl | Comments 4 Comments

Juan Sebastián Verón recently matched his famous father’s feat of winning the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes. But if there were any doubts about Seba being an Estudiantes legend, he sealed the deal this week by taking a voluntary 40% pay cut to help the club out financially.
It’s no secret that Argentinean football is struggling for [...]

Brazilian Soccer Player Red Carded After Changing His Shorts

By: Daryl | Comments 2 Comments

Náutico defender Vagner Silva was sent off in Brazil last week, after changing his shorts on the field. If you want to be pedantic (and I do) then it was actually a second booking rather than a straight red. But still… not cool.
Apparently you can’t remove items of clothing without the referees permission. But considering [...]

Penarol vs Newell’s Old Boys: A Not so Friendly Friendly

By: Daryl | Comments 2 Comments

This was supposed to be a friendly between Penarol (of Uruguay, yellow and black) and Newell’s Old Boys (of Argentina, red and black).
But the game was abandoned with 40 minutes on the clock, when a punch-up between Penarol midfielder Julio Mozzo (#7) and Newell’s defender Diego Mateo (#5) turned into a mass brawl between the [...]
