What Would You Ask Landon Donovan?

UPDATE: Questions have been selected, asked and answered. Check out the post here

Donovan_USAA while back, we got the opportunity to ask Sir Alex Ferguson a few questions, and we asked you, the Offside readers, to help us pick our questions. Now we have another big interview coming up on Monday, and we are looking for your input once again. We will have a few minutes to talk to a certain American goalscorer you might have heard of, goes by the name of Landon Donovan. That leaves us basically time for three questions. So here’s how this will work:

One question will come from the staff of the USA World Cup Blog, one from the bloggers over at the LA Galaxy Offside, and one from you, the readers. So leave your questions in the comments below this post today and over the weekend, and we will pick one to ask on Monday.

Want to ask him about Europe in his past or future, or about his hopes for the USA in four years, or about the Galaxy’s run in to the end of the season? It’s all on the table. Nothing about that water fountain photo, or anything too personal, but if it’s football related and you think it would make a good interview question, knock yourself out.

Also, if you see a comment that you like, do the right thing and “Like” it (there’s a button for that in our fancy new Disqus setup), and that will help us choose. Get to it!

As a kid, what was your favorite football/soccer team?

I'd ask Landon who he looked to as an inspiration or an example when he was a youth player, and how the presence of a top-tier professional league in the U.S., complete with its own 'soccer heroes,' might have affected his development and career.

Landon, with the domestic success of the World Cup and the attention that it has given to the game, how critical is it that Major League Soccer take this opportunity to build the league in the eyes of Americans? What suggestions would you have for Don Garber to accomplish this?
  • Jeffgonot
Your time at Everton was wonderful to watch and the Goodison faithful loved you for it. If given the opportunity again, would you return to Everton on a loan deal during the MLS off season?

I would take my question from Andrei Arshavin's latest web Q&A session (by way of Dirty Tackle):

"I saw your pictures taken during training on the <del datetime="2010-08-07T08:58:37+00:00">Arsenal </del>[change to Galaxy, obviously] web-site, and I figured that you are a very cheerful man, just like me ... So my question is: what does space smell like? "

Just so that he would have the opportunity to answer as Andrei did: "Space smells of eternity."

Yep. Ask Landycakes what space smells like.

Landon, is there a darkhorse player at the moment that you believe could be a big contributor to the US side in the next world cup qualifying cycle?
  • Whats the most difficult player youve ever faced in terms of a player marking you or goalkeeper youve gone up against?
Out of all the goals youve scored in your career which one is your favorite? (maybe one for international and one for club)
Would you ever consider a coaching role?
When did you first and why do you sometimes decide to fix your eyebrows before a pk, is there a story behind it or is it just pure badassedness?

Who were the top five players you ever played with?
  • Landycakes, why do you continue to play in the MLS?
  • FCBayern Fan
Because he is MLS, I don't think he made such an impact at Everton, he is way "overrated" or not rated all for me.

The best player USA got, for me is Clint Demsey, he is a true player.
  • LaurieInSeattle
Yep, you're such a fan of Dempsey you can't even spell his name right.
  • FCBayern Fan
lol, dempsey is much better than donovan...donovan plays well in mls because its MLS, but at Everton or Bayer he wasn't even noticed by nobody...

I'd ask Donovan : Do you think "soccer" is going to become "football" in america? Meaning is it going to be #1 or no?

Will the French people embrace McDonalds as their national restaurant?

    No.

"I'd ask Donovan : Do you think "soccer" is going to become "football" in america? Meaning is it going to be #1 or no?"

That's easy. No. But the thing is it doesn't have to in order to be successful. The popularity of different sports are woven into the fabric of cultures through history. While there is some history of soccer in this country it is fractured at best. American football on the other hand has had a consistent presence in the American eye for nearly a hundred years, a fact that is reflected in commercial support. You may like soccer better than football but as far as its popularity and support in the States is concerned it needs time to grow. But the reality in the US is that football (American football that is) is and will remain king.

Did not have an impact at Everton? Did you watch any of the games? Seriously?
  • Ian
Let's not get nasty now, kids.
