100+ Arrested Outside Bremen Match
By: Martha | December 3rd, 2007
In good news, Werder Bremen got their second huge win in a week, following up the Champions League defeat of Real Madrid with a 2-1 victory over local rivals Hamburger SV, a result that (briefly) vaulted them over Bayern Munich and into first place in the Bundesliga. In bad news, over 100 fans were arrest in Bremen during the match after fighting with one another and police. Super.
Most of those arrested are reported to be known hooligans who were banned from attending the match, so at least that bit of enforcement is working. Unfortunately, they decided to traveled to Bremen anyway, presumably just to drink and hang about. (Gee, I can’t imagine why anything bad came out of that.) The major conflict seems to have erupted in a restaurant away from the ground, when supporters decide to stage a mini-riot and destroy some cars. Not surprisingly, the police intervened, and this is where most of the arrests occurred, though some also came after the match, when rival groups of supporters came to blows.
Most of those taken into custody appear to have been booked and released, by which I mean “loaded into vans by cops and put on trains to go home.”
