Fan for a Match: TSV 1860 München
By: Bob | August 17th, 2006
This week’s adopted team takes us the dangerous and exciting waters on the 2nd division Bundesliga in Germany where we plan on throwing our full weight behind TSV 1860 München.
The reason for this week’s selection? It is simple, really. We were asked by blog reader Coleman to support his favorite team and since we are the most democratic dictatorship around we decided to do a little research and see if the team is worthy of an international audience’s backing for a game. We decided it was. Plus they have an umlaut in their name.
What we found out is that despite being known as 1860, the club was actually a concept that began in a pub in 1848. Unlike most concepts that begin in pubs, this one came to fruition and got its start in May 1860, the year Abraham Lincoln was elected president, the discovery of the planet Vulcan was announced at a meeting of the Académie des Sciences in Paris, and the first nursing school was opened in England.
All of these historic events were good omens for TSV 1860 München as they played many years in Germany’s top division. This all came to a crashing halt in 2003/04 when the team was relegated to the second division and financial troubles ensued. Last season they once again faced relegation but managed to stay up in the end.
TSV 1860 München began their 2006 campaign last week with a 1-1 draw against SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Things will be better on Friday when they face the much despised Kickers Offenbach at home with The Offside’s considerable support behind them. With one loss and one draw in the books, we think that TSV 1860 München is poised to deliver us the elusive glory that is missing from our life.
