From Sportsman to Thug

lucio.jpgThose of you who don’t suffer entirely from short-term memory loss (we do too, so don’t feel bad) will recall that during the World Cup Brazil defender Lucio established a tournament record for playing the most minutes without being cited for a penalty. Lucio’s 386 penalty-free minutes were impressive, but his clean play hasn’t quite carried over to his play with Bayern Munich.

It was announced yesterday that the defender would be suspended for three games for an elbow he threw during Bayern’s 2-1 win over FC St Pauli last weekend. We checked out the elbow in question at the 3:29 mark of the video below and it looked fairly innocent to us. Certainly not worthy of a three-game suspension, especially considering Lucio doesn’t exactly have the reputation of, say, Ben Thatcher, who you probably know by now has been suspended for eight games.

By the way, we don’t usually take favorites on this blog, but we do love FC St. Pauli fans for their skull and crossbones flags and progressive ways.
