Kahn Retires with Record
By: Ian Rose | May 17th, 2008The last game of legendary keeper Oliver Kahn’s professional career was a fitting end for one of the all-time greats between the posts. Even though he let in one goal from Berlin, Kahn finished his season in record form, helping Bayern Munich set the new all-time mark for least goals allowed in a Bundesliga season. Including today’s match, only 21 goals bulged the Bayern net, beating the old record of 22 from Werder Bremen in 1988.
Luca Toni scored a hat trick in the win today, making it 29 24 Bundesliga goals for his season, and making him one of the few players who can boast scoring more goals than all of his team’s combined opponents over an entire season. Cristiano Ronaldo is on that list as well, with 31 goals to Man United opponents’ 22.
Kahn retires having won 8 Bundesliga titles, twelve domestic cups, and a winners’ medal from both the Champions League and UEFA Cup. Add to that his international prizes, which include Euro 1996 and both a second and third place finish at the World Cup. In 2002, he became the first and only keeper to win the Golden Ball for the World Cup’s most valuable player. Enjoy the video evidence of his amazing career. They call him the “Titan”, and never has a nickname fit so well.

Small correction: Luca Toni scored 24 goals in the Bundesliga or 39 in all competitions (5 goals in 4 DFB Pokal matches, 10 goals in 11 UEFA Cup matches). Amazing nonetheless of course.
