Low Scoring Hamburg’s Goals Might be too small

go001m.JPGIt hasn’t been the best of years for Hamburg SV. After finishing third in the Bundesliga last season the club had high expectations, but they are in the bottom of the league standings and just last week they gave manager Thomas Doll his walking papers. A German newspaper has done some research and has discovered one possible reason why Hamburg is the lowest scoring team in the Bundesliga this season: the goals at their homes stadium could be too small.

According to the Hamburger Abendblatt, the goals in the Hamburg Arena are 2.39 meters high. The crossbars are a full five centimeters lower than the regulation 2.44 meters.

“Obviously we’re going to measure that again,” HSV spokesman Joern Wolf told Germany’s SID sports news agency.

“If those numbers reported are correct, we will make sure we have a new goal in place that conforms with the rules by the next match against Borussia Dortmund. It’s a good thing no one hit the crossbar last week in the Energie Cottbus match.”

Talk about some investigative reporting! It does make you wonder how they even thought to measure the height of the goals. I guess that is easier than measuring the talent and the heart of the team’s players.
