Lukas Podolski to Köln – A Transfer Rumour You Can Support
By: Daryl | January 7th, 2009
Most transfer rumours make me want to spit. It’s usually players wanting money and clubs throwing it at them. And even though we ultimately don’t care for the people involved, we wind up following the drama as it unfolds on newspaper back pages and Sky Sports News. See Cole, Ashley, 2006, or Berbatov, Dimitar, 2008.
But once in a while there comes a transfer rumour you can really get behind. Gossip you can support. And this January that rumour is Lukas Podolksi to FC Köln.
Podolski came up through the ranks at Köln, and had three good seasons there (scoring 46 in 81, according to Wikipedia) before his big money move to Bayern in 2006. That move has gone so-so at best, with Podolski currently third choice behind Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose.
So… Poldi is off. The 23 year old has been linked with plenty of good teams, mostly thanks to his excellent performances for the German national team. Plenty of clubs have shown an interest (including Spurs, Man City, Hamburg, Roma, Marseille and maybe even Real Madrid) but what Poldi really, really wants is to either play for Barcelona (who wouldn’t right now?) or a return to Köln.
Barca don’t seem all that interested, but Köln definitely want him back. There’s even been a piece of music written about the his potential return.
Problem is that Köln are fairly small in Bundesliga terms, and are having trouble coughing up the required euros for Podolski. They’ve offered €7.5m, but Bayern are holding out for €10m. But it’s not over ’til it’s over.
And so this is easily my favourite transfer story of January now, because it has the potential for a happy ending. After getting a cold bum on the Bayern bench, how great would it be to see Podolski banging in goals for his first love again?

As a Barca supporter, I’d be glad to have him but not just yet. Maybe next January or Summer 2010. Henry will be old/gone/done by then, and who knows if Eto’o will be around. Podolski can play up top or in the left wing role that Henry (and sometimes Iniesta) has been playing this season. There are other players (Benzema, Aguero, Suarez, etc.) that I’d rather have though, but he is certainly an option.

I think he’d have the same problem at Barca that he’s having at Bayern right now. At 23, he needs first team football.

I agree with you Daryl. I usually hate transfer stories, but this one is pretty engaging. I have been following it pretty closely over The Hamburg Offside.
