Mainz Completes Incredible Comeback over Wolfsburg

logoThe 1.Bundesliga has entered its second week, and it looks to be an incredible matchday for the German top flight. On Friday, Bayern Munich was beaten 2-0 by newly promoted Kaiserslautern, a team most outside of Germany have never even heard of. Today, it was Wolfsburg’s turn to stumble, but they did it in much more spectacular fashion, giving up a 3-0 lead as Mainz fought back to what will surely be one of the great comebacks of this club season.

It all started so well for Steve McClaren’s Wolfsburg. Two early goals from Edin Dzeko had them up 2-0 before the half hour mark, and brand spanking new player Diego, just signed from Juve, made it 3-0 just two minutes later. Morten Rasmussen got one back for the visitors, but going into halftime it was still a fairly comfortable 3-1 for Wolfsburg. The second half, though, was all Mainz, with goals from Elkin Soto and Andre Schurrle to draw the two sides even, then a winner that will be remembered for a long time in Mainz, as Adam Szalai completed the comeback win, 4-3.

That leaves Wolfsburg on zero points (along with Schalke and other traditional powers) from their first two matches, and Mainz and Kaiserslautern both sit on a perfect six. A bizarro table, brought to you by the Bundesliga:
