Also, I think the ref was just turning around as MvB did the gesture, so he saw it.

You’re right mele. I rewatched the gesture bit so many times I forgot to get a proper look at the initial tackle. It was the Hamburg player who slid in on van Bommel, and then seems like MvB got the first yellow for dissent, for smacking the ball out the Hamburg player’s hands.

Initial tackle?
Looked like the hamburg player tackled MvB to me.
Or maybe I’m crazy.
But it looked like the hamburger (haha) tackled MvB, MvB went to take the throw in, the ref called the throw-in to go the other way, the hamburger ran around and grabbed the ball out of MvB’s hand. MvB then proceeded to smack the ball out of the hamburger’s hand. I think that was where the initial yellow came from.

Unless i’m crazy.

True story: I had almost the exact same experience when I was 10. Instead of a referee it was my best friend’s Dad, and instead of a yellow card it was him telling me I wasn’t allowed to come in and play with my friend. As I walked back across the street I turned around and gave the ‘up yours’ and there was the Dad watching me through the open door. I was mortified. I got over it.
