Markus Merk Takes a Break from His Break
By: Bob | August 1st, 2006
Coming off a nice, relaxing vacation following our adventures on World Cup Blog, we can relate to top referee Markus Merk. The German ref will not be around for the start of the Bundesliga because he is taking some R & R following a disappointing World Cup in which he was not assigned any matches in the round of 16 or quarterfinals.
“It really upset him that he was not nominated for any matches in the round of 16 or quarter-finals,” the head of officiating of the German football association (DFB) Volker Roth said. “Markus Merk wants to get away for a while after the World Cup and will go on holiday for the next four weeks. I can thoroughly understand that.”
As can we.
But the real question is where does a highly recognizable referee who sucked during the World Cup and undoubtedly is hated by many fans go to get some peace and quiet? With the $40,000 he earned for he two World Cup games he officiated, the possibilities are surely endless.
