New Move: German Ref Produces the Simultaneous Double Yellow

By: Daryl | November 25th, 2008

This is from Mainz vs St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga, and the awesome official flashing two simultaneous yellows is Thomas Metzen. The word awesome gets thrown around a lot these days as a synonym for “good”, but in this case I mean it literally.

Great entertainment, but also the sort of smooth move that might even bring about some actual respect for referees. It’s not quite the sonic boom whistle, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Sent to us by the fine volk at FANartisch. Visit their post to learn the secret of where Metzen came up with the double yellow idea.

He should be more careful, I think pilots might confuse that for the signal to land.

Hilarious, though even with google translate, I’m not entirely sure of where he came up with the idea.

mele419: feigning injury or bitching or whatever. I think the ref was really waiting for a moment, where he could double book players, so he surely interpreted the player’s behavior in a way, that would allow him to double yellow. :-)

Jan: That’s what I thought, but when the red player kicked the ball at him it might have actually knocked him down, since it looks like it hit him in the hamstring/back of the knee. That’s just my interpretation though!

Yeah, Marco, even I understood that, and German is a language I don’t speak a word of.

Gotta know that ref has been practicing that move for years just hoping to use it someday. Very enjoyable.
