Well, Neuer is from Gelsenkirchen himself, and well-known for being an actual Schalke fan before he was their first-choice goalkeeper. If any player is going to over-celebrate a win in Germany’s biggest derby, it’s going to be him. (Especially since he spent the summer not saying no to Bayern Munich.)

Sounds like Neuer’s decided he hasn’t been crazy enough to get his spot in the German team goal, so with national team manager Oliver Bierhoff in attendence at the match, he’s stepping up the nuttiness in a bid to get noticed. Neuer also ran way out of the goal at some point, a la Jens Lehmann’s recent madness (though Neuer had two defenders to protect the goal, unlike Jens).

‘The YouTuber who posted the above vid called it a “Wembley Goal”, which I’m assuming is a reference to the infamous Geoff Hurst goal from the 1966 World Cup Final.’
Daryl, ‘Wembley Goal’ or ‘Wembley Tor’ as it is known in German, is a reference for any goal that wasn’t in German football. And yes, the term came about after the infamous Geoff Hurst goal.
