Supporting Hertha and Bayern From the Other Side of the Berlin Wall

By: Daryl | November 9th, 2009

It was 20 years ago today that the Berlin Wall fell, and so Jan posted the above video about Helmut Klopfleisch on Bundesliga Offside, which I’d also like to share with readers here on the front page.

Klopfleisch was either very brave or very crazy, because – in a nutshell – he lived in the GDR (aka East Germany) but supported football teams based on the other side of the Wall in the FDR (aka West Germany).

The two and a half minute story is in German. But don’t worry, there are English subtitles (which I had no idea was possible until today, well done YouTube.) If you don’t see the subtitles after hitting play, then click in the bottom right corner of the video and then click “CC” for closed captions.

For a more detailed (and just all round) better explanation of everything in the video, visit Jan’s original post at Bundesliga Offside.

Simon Kuper did a chapter about this man in his book Football Against the Enemy. This man is most certainly a fan. I mean, I love my team and all, but I just dont know if I would be willing to take on the Stasi in order to support them.
