The Club v Country Clash of the Titans

The most excellent battle of club v country is incredibly about to get infinitely better:

Mark van Bommel returned from international duty today…dramatic music…injured.

Not normally news, and it’s not really a tremendously bad injury, but the two parties at hand – Bayern and Holland – have something of a history.

You may recall or currently be mired in World War III, which began when Holland did the unforgivable thing of bringing Arjen Robben to the World Cup, playing him even when injured. Given that he is, yes, Arjen Robben, he returned injured and will not see a Bundespitch until some time in the new year. This displeased the seemingly always displeased board of Bayern, which has now entered into talks with Oranje suits over compensation – or else they were gonna sue their asses. Harsh, but effective.

Turns out two are going to be speaking an awful lot over the coming weeks. Or maybe Bayern yelling and the KNVB trying to ignore.

Bayern “is going to make UEFA aware of this affair in the coming days and is keeping open the possibility of legal action against the KNVB,” the statement warned.

Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: “It is unfortunately exactly as we’d feared.”

He criticised the manner in which “a federation defends exclusively its interests in putting the health of a player on the line”.

Here’s a solution: stop buying Dutch players.

But this is worth watching, since the three-headed monster that is Bayern’s board has something of a reputation for excellent commentary when they’re displeased. Which is often.

In other news, this was on the internet.
