The German Football Match That’s 113 Years Late Kicking Off
By: Daryl | July 21st, 2007
You read that right. German clubs FC Hanau ‘93 (pictured)and BFC Viktoria Berlin will meet today to decide which of them was crowned German champions of 1894. 113 years ago, the two teams were due to play each other in the first German championship match. Unfortunately, what with it being the 19th century and all, Hanau (based in Hessen) couldn’t afford to travel to Berlin. The game was canceled and BFC were declared champions by default.
Bizarre to think that this was so long ago that none of the original players could possibly be alive (though a game contested between two teams of 100+ year olds would be a little slow) and I certainly hope no Hanau fans have been waiting around all that time for their chance at German glory.
BFC are favourites to win the ancient title once again as they currently play in a higher division than Hanau. BFC are a pro club in the fifth tier, while Hanau are now an amateur club playing in a regional league, though they’re hoping the publicity from this game could breathe new life into the club and put them on track to reclaim their professional status.
Actually, all the odds are stacked in Berlin’s favour. The match is only to decide “the moral victor” so even if Hanau cause an upset and claim a victory 113 years in the making, they’ll still have to settle for being 1894 runners up. Proof that the teams with all the money have all the advantages in football, and that’s as true now as it was in the nineteenth century.

It would be much more interesting if the winner were to actually be declared the champions of that tournament.

You’ve beaten me to that story.
I had already planned to write a post about it but as I now realised messed up the date. I thought it would be just one match played on July 28th. Instead it’s a two-legged contest happening on July 21st and July 28th. Anyway, I’ll link to this post instead now.Posted from
