The Unluckiest Goalkeeper in the Bundesliga

By: Daryl | May 13th, 2008

With just seven minutes to go in the game againt Borussia Dortmund this past Saturday, Arminia Bielefeld had a 2-1 lead that would have guaranteed safety from 1. Bundesliga relegation. But then disaster struck.

It struck Rowen Fernández right in the face.

Dortmund’s Alexander Frei bent the vicious free kick at goal, and for a nanosecond Bielefeld’s South African keeper Fernández must have been relieved to see that the Swiss striker had hit the post.

He was probably less relieved to see the ball coming straight for his face. Even less relived when it hit him in the face, and downright distraught to see it hit the back of the net. I get the feeling Fernández doesn’t collapse so much from taking an Alexander Frei free kick to the head as he does from despair. He’s got my sympathy.

Those two points lost mean Bielefeld are in trouble. Three go down, and they’re fourth bottom, but FC Nürnberg are just two points behind and boast a better goal difference. Which means Bielefeld need a win in their final game, away to VfB Stuttgart, to guarantee survival. So don’t be surprised if Rowan Fernández has the game of his life next Saturday.
