Wolfsburg Make Very Very Sure to Win Bundesliga
By: Daryl | May 23rd, 2009There’s no single video of all six goals available yet, but the ease of Wolfsburg’s fifth (above, scored by Edin Džeko) seems to pretty much sums up how it went.
The title was basically in the bag for Wolfsburg after 15 minutes, by which time Zvjezdan Misimović and Grafite had made it 2-0. Poor Sebastian Prödl put into his own net to make double sure. Diego pulled a nice goal back for Werder, but then Grafite got the fourth and Džeko the fifth. You can see all six goals at TVGolo.
Diego will have one more game for Werder (the DFB Pokal final vs Bayer Leverkusen) before heading south to Juventus. Judging by the UEFA Cup Final, they’re going to have a tough time replacing him.
As for Wolfsburg… who knows? We might be about to see one of those epic Ajax-esque dismantlings of a successful team. Manager Felix Magath is definitely leaving to take over at Schalke next season (and credit to everyone involved for not letting that move derail the end of Wolfsburg’s season) while the likes of Grafite, Džeko and Misimović (17 assists this season) will surely attract some interest from the big dogs.
Elsewhere Bayern did all they could by beating Stuttgart 2-1, securing second place and a golden ticket to the Champions League group stage. Stuttgart will have to settle for third place and the lottery of Champions qualifying.
Hertha Berlin go into the Europa League as they finished fourth despite losing 4-0 to Karlsruhe, while Hamburg pipped Borussia Dortmund to fifth place (and the second Europa League spot) with a 3-2 win over Frankfurt. Dortmund could only draw away to Borussia Monchengladbach, a result that kept BM one point clear of relegation.
Karlsruhe put up an excellent fight against relegation with that big win over Hertha, but still finished second bottom due to results elsewhere. They’ll be joined by Arminia Bielefeld who could only draw at home to Hannover. Energie Cottbus’ 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen gets them to the halfway house of a playoff vs Nürnberg (who finished third in 2. Bundesliga). Winner of that game plays in the top flight next season.
The final day of the Bundesliga was LiveBlogged by Jan on Bundesliga Offside, so definitely give that a read if you’re looking for a more informed version of how things unfolded.
Final table looks like this:

Amazing end to the season in Germany. To have four sides each having the possibility to win the title on the final day of the season is simply brilliant!
Congratulations to Wolfsburg!
