Dutch Police Clog up the Eredivise Title Race (sorry)
By: Daryl | March 10th, 2008
Not a great week for Ajax fans. First the return of the hallowed Johan Cruyff (who’s like the Kevin Keegan of Ajax, except he knows about football) ended in shambles. Cruyff had been brought in to revamp the Ajax set up, but when he tried to do exactly that with an overhaul of the youth system, the club weren’t keen and the great man was on his way. So much for the Cruyff - Van Basten dream team then. What about the title race?
Bad news there too. Ajax currently trail PSV by six points but had the chance to claw back three of those when the two title chasers clashed this past weekend. Except they didn’t, because the Dutch police got in the way again.
Just as they did in December, the Dutch fuzz chose to highlight their ongoing pay dispute by refusing to show up for three key Eredivise games this past Sunday, including the all-important PSV vs Ajax title show down. And no po-po means no football. Ajax put in a last minute appeal to try and force the game to ahead, but the court decided the police were within their rights. The AZ Alkmaar vs Feyenoord and VVV Venlo vs Twente Enschede games were also postponed.
The Dutch coppers are either very smart or very stupid. On one hand this is a great way to draw attention to their plight and maybe create a public demand for the pay dispute to get resolved. Dutch people love them some football. On the other hand, this could easily turn public opinion against the police, because Dutch people love them some football.

1. Cruyff is a 10 year-old trapped in a 60 year-old’s body. Dude embarrasses himself way too often with the childish antics like this latest episode.
2. Didn’t see it mentioned in the blog post, but Ajax has brought a lawsuit against the police union.
