A Celtic Leeds by any other name
By: Bob | July 30th, 2007
Pity the poor folks at Farsley Celtic. The club has been promoted to the Blue Square Premier league in England and yet nobody knows who the bloody hell they are. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are playing in a lower level league with the likes of Altrincham, Crawley Town and Woking, of course. The club’s obscurity is due to its name. Are they Celtic? Are they Farsley? Are they Parsley? Are they owned by Chris Farley?
The simple solution to this mess, at least in the eyes of the Farsely Celtic chairman Andy Firbank, is to ditch the name that has been used for 100 years and to come up with something cleverer. Something more familiar. Something creative like FC Leeds or Leeds Celtic.
Farsley chairman Andy Firbank said: “It comes down to what’s best for Farsley Celtic as a club.
“If we need to change our name to take us up another level from a crowd support point of view then that’s what we need to do.”
“We don’t have any ambitions to be another Leeds United. We really wouldn’t want to be. There are a lot of differences in the two clubs,” added Fairbank.
You don’t say. Poaching on the name of a more famous club surely will do wonders for attendance. Just ask Real Madrid. Their attendance has been great ever since they took on the name of Real Salt Lake.

This actually makes sense to me. Last year our pub team changed its name from “ACLs Waiting to Tear FC” to “Manchester United”. I now make £75,000 a week.

They could save money too by using Leeds hand me down uniforms.
