A Name to Remember: Aaron Ramsey
By: Bob | August 24th, 2007
For a player who has played a total of one minute in the English Championship, Aaron Ramsey sure is attracting a lot of attention. There is a reason for this. He is just 16 years old and he has a talent that is well beyond his age.
Ramsey became the youngest ever player at Cardiff City when he made his brief debut during the final minute against Hull City last season. His appearance broke the club record which was set by John Toshack, the current boss of the Wales national team. Toshack has a vested interest in Ramsey’s development. He is weighing the possibility of giving the young midfielder a cap at the senior level during Euro 2008 qualifying this fall.
Ramsey is currently the captain of Wales U-16 team and this week he made an impressive debut for the U-21 team during their 4-3 victory over Sweden. His play earned the praise of manager Brian Flynn.
Flynn said: “The boy is far better than simply a very good young player. He is a mature boy who is going to go all the way in the game – there can be no question of that.
“I think we will see him becoming a senior Wales international very soon. But a lot depends now on how Cardiff decide to bring him on – his progress at Ninian will help shape his development with us.
How long Cardiff will be able to hold onto him remains to be seen. The club has said that they aren’t interested in selling him at this point despite reportedly receiving a seven figure bids from one of the Premier League teams in London.
An attacking midfielder with a strong body, Ramsey has drawn comparisons to a young Steven Gerrard. It will take more minutes to see if the 16-year-old is ready to play at the highest level, but the mere fact he is where he is at this point makes him A Name to Remember.
