Arsenal Players Give Up a Day’s Wages for Charity. And the WAGs Weep.

By: Laurie | December 16th, 2007

gallas-giver.jpgSomewhere out there, the Arsenal WAGs are weeping.

The entire Arsenal team — players, staff, even cleaning people — have offered up their salaries from today’s game for Treehouse, a charity that benefits families affected by autism. (And yes, I’m certain it was completely voluntary. No coercion whatsoever.)

So how much money are we talking here?

Well, according to The Independent, the average Premiership salary in 2006 was $26,000. No, that’s per week. This means that a day’s wages, on average, is about $3700.

Yes, $3700. Do you know how many designer handbags a WAG could buy for that?

Well, okay, none. But she could at least make a down payment.

The team’s entire staff - from directors to cleaners - are all donating too, while manager Arsène Wenger has urged all Gooners fans to put their hands in their pockets to help the club’s chosen charity.

In a rare coup for the charity, the entire match day will be dedicated to raising cash for TreeHouse as part of Arsenal’s “Be a Gooner. Be a Giver” initiative, with 50p from every programme sold going to the charity, plus advertising around Emirates Stadium.

And does anybody else feel a little sorry for those “cleaners,” who got caught up in the front office’s zeal and desire to do good when they might have preferred to send their pay towards a more noble cause? Like, I don’t know, feeding their kids?

For the players and management, though, this is a good thing. It would be great to see more overpaid stars go this route occasionally.

I think that Beckham should give up a few days’ salary to help the poverty-line guys on his team!
