Cardiff City Going to Wembley, But Not Europe

Cardiff City fc flagIn response to a very good question posed by Dave from Dave’s Football Blog in a comment under this post, the answer is no. Turns out Cardiff City won’t be eligible to compete in the UEFA Cup next season should they go all the way in the FA Cup this season.

The problem is that Cardiff City are a Welsh team competing in an English competition. The English FA will not put them forward as a European representative because they’re not an English team, and the FA of Wales cannot put them forward as a Welsh representative because they don’t play in any FAW competitions. It’s the old rock and a hard place scenario.

Part of the problem is – shock – the English FA’s inflexibility. Here’s what an FA representative had to say.

Our position remains unchanged and should Cardiff win the FA Cup this season they would not be chosen as the FA’s nomination for European competition.

Cardiff enter into English domestic competitions on this understanding and they are fully aware of the rules and regulations under which they take part.

These rules remain the same and there would be no scope for Cardiff, or any of the other Welsh clubs in the English system, to qualify for Europe as England’s representative.

So that’s that. At the same time, Welsh clubs aren’t keen on any sort of compromise that would damage their own chances at European qualification. Carmarthen Town might not win the UEFA Cup anytime soon, but damn they’ve earned the right to give it a go and see no reason to give up that right to a team that think they’re too big for the Welsh domestic league.

The result is that Cardiff City will never ever play in Europe, which is a bit sad. Especially because they had a real chance this year, because if they were an English club they could still qualify as runners-up should they lose to Portsmouth in the final and Portsmouth already have a UEFA Cup spot through their Premier League position.

All this messiness is part of a bigger problem in British football, where the league English is unequally powerful and therefore home to players from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Occasionally it gets messy, as with this situation, but if FIFA ever introduce the 6+5 rule there’s going to be absolute chaos as everyone involved tries to convince Sepp Blatter that British players shouldn’t be treated as foreigners in the Premier League and Blatter suggests the home nations lose their national identity and merge. There will be blood. Metaphorically, of course.

In the meantime, the only hope Cardiff City has of playing in Europe is for either the English FA to show some forward thinking flexibility (don’t hold your breath) or to find a compromise that allows them to compete in the Welsh FA Cup somehow and earn a European spot that way.

But really, it doesn’t matter. As mentioned earlier, the FA Cup this year isn’t about European qualification. It’s about lifting the famous old trophy, and if the Bluebirds manage that feat, then the technicalities of UEFA Cup qualification will (hopefully) be the last thing on everyone’s mind at that point.

Cardiff are not allowed to play in FAW cup anymore because they were winning it every year and therefore would be qualifying for europe. if they win the English FA cup surely they should be allowed to enter europe. should they be excluded from both competitions? One or the other i say. if they can't qualify through the FA cup they should be allowed to play in the FAW cup.

You guys do know how outrageously bad the Welsh league is right? It's like giving someone the choice between losing a finger or losing a leg.

Uhhhh, this situation isn't messy at all. It's Cardiff's decision not to play in Europe, not the English FA's. Eons ago when Cardiff asked to join the English pyramid, the FA said, "you can either compete in the Welsh domestic league, or we'll allow you into the English domestic league but you can't take an English European place... your choice." Cardiff knew the options upfront, and they chose England/no-Europe over Wales/Europe. Again, it was their choice. As such, there's nothing messy about it and they shouldn't be allowed into Europe. If the day comes that they decide the Europe option really is of primary importance to them then they can always join the Wales domestic league.

Monaco are a different case - there is no Monaco league. Wales want to have their cake and eat it. They want a separate FA and a separate national team, yet when it's convenient they want their best team to be English!

Cardiff has chosen to be a Welsh team in England. If they played in the Welsh league, they'd be in Europe every year, but they traded that chance for the ability to play in England. It's their choice, and they can rejoin the Welsh league if they want to play in Europe.
  • I think that is just plain wrong, it really shouldn't matter if they are Welsh or English if they are the winners - They should be able to compete in Europe!

    AS Monaco? Anyone?

    Barnsley, George, that was Barnsley.

What a bunch of douchebags! If Cardiff City was able to beat Chelsea AND Liverpool, they could probably handle the teams in the Champions League! Cardiff City should be allowed to compete, it's not their fault if the English teams suck.
  • They knew the rules and so no problem. Its not like the rules are being changed mid-stream.
  • Look, I hate Cardiff as much as the next guy, but that is just plain stupid.

Might this happen to the Wellington side in the A League as well?
  • Lame. So fricken' lame.

Mike, if the Old Firm were to join the Premier League, they would be under the same rule, and would basically be giving up any chance at ever going to Europe again. As Celtic and Rangers are both successful European clubs, with a huge amount of their revenue coming from Europe, that's not happening anytime soon. Short of a European Super League, which seems less likely these days, the Old Firm are staying right where they are.

All of this makes me wonder about the ramifications of the proposed idea of the Old Firm joining the EPL. Not that the idea is going anywhere, but just wonderin'.
  • Thanks for the follow-up. Perhaps it's reward enough for the Welsh to raid England and come back with a trophy...
  • Period point is!!

As the Welsh Football Association have their own league, why are Wrexham, Cardiff, Swansea, Chester to a degree cos they are half in Wales, in the ENGLISH pyramid anyway??

We aint got no Irish teams nor Scottish, so why are does the ENGLISH League have Welsh teams?

Amazing really a Welsh team reaches the English FA CUP semi-final and 33,000 daffs and sheep shaggers are going to storm North London along with 33,000 flat cap and whippet owners

Of the other 24,000 tickets available, 17,000 of those belong to 'Corporate City.' Will they turn up? And if they do what will it be? A daff, sheep or a flat cap or whipppet?
