Come Back Carling Cup, All is Forgiven

By: Daryl | January 28th, 2010

Remember how we all thought the Carling Cup was a snoozefest? I did anyway. Turns out I was wrong.

After the Carlitos’ revenge and sock-sucking drama of last week’s first leg, Man Utd and Man City served up another stonker of a game for the second course last night. Highlights (via TVGolo) are above.

Man Utd went into the second leg at Old Trafford 2-1 down, but finished 4-3 winners on aggregate thanks to Wayne Rooney’s 92nd minute goal. Proper drama, and a lot more exciting than watching the Arsenal youth team get a run out.

Because that’s pretty much what the Carling Cup had degenerated into. But the two legs of this semi-final have served as a timely reminder of what cup football is supposed to look like, and I want to see more.

The Carling Cup final will be Aston Villa vs Man Utd, February 28th at Wembley.

  • Luka's right though, the other semi was fantastic too. Here's hoping for more of the same in the final.
  • I think the fact that it was a Carling Cup game last night is immaterial here. they just as well have been playing an Intertoto qualifier.

this was all about the return of the Manchester derby, which could very well for the first time in my lifetime, eclipse the Merseyside derby as England's toughest.
  • Don't forget the 6-4 Villa win in the other semi!
